Coleman Headwall Mt Baker 8 Apr 2011

Ryan and I caught this in fat condition. After no sleep, we arrived sometime around 3:45a at our turnaround; my odometer indicated we had 3+ miles of road to the trailhead. Later than desired departure at 4:20a.

Shaking off sleeplessness, we cranked up our chosen approach, realizing and grumbling that it was somewhat roundabout. But it was a beautiful sunny day (rare this year) and spirits rose considerably when we saw how well filled in everything was.

The initial rollover entrance to the headwall was precipitous and airy. Exposed and variably icy and wind-packed powdery pucker turns gave way to super steep puckery powder turns.

We enjoyed the ski down. An icy chute midway caused consternation, but in general the route was in incredible shape. The Puget Sound was visible.

I imagine this will be in shape for quite a while longer this season.

Went up on Sunday but only got a fleeting glimpse. It looked incredible. Good job on nailing the window. I need to ski this line this summer.

It's impossible to do anything in WA in a week. A month-long window is needed.

Looks so nice. I'm still not done with skiing yet and miss the snowy peaks despite awesome climbing going on.

Didn't look nearly as nice when I was up there Friday. Wind blasted, ice visible, natural avalanches shooting into the flats. Incredible what a dynamic spot that is, it seems to be a living beast, a gargantuan ice slug that can only be trifled with when it is in a truly docile state.
