SICK STYLES - UPDATES AND FEEDBACK HERE

Please post feedback regarding changes to the appearance of the forum here. I'll be tweaking it until it doesn't suck. Hopefully we can come to some consensus about that. This is a little difficult to read, but I just made a quick first pass.

So most buttons were missing because I failed to copy a directory, but now they should be there.

Please note the A+ icon at the top right. It allows users to quickly adjust the font size on any page.

And don't try to dilute my gangsta vibe, Cec.

And congratulations again to Lindsey Vonn! And congratultions to Fischbacher and Maze and all my friends who are going skiing this weekend.

I changed the setting so that emails aren't visible. Emails can be sent via the board, but email addresses aren't public. Seems like the way to go to me.

Testing the behavior of attached photos.
DirtyNF.jpg
This photo has been uploaded as an attachment using the "Upload Attachment" option that is available below the textarea when a user makes a post. After attaching the photo, I clicked "Place inline" to include the thumbnail, which is automatically linked to the large version of the photo.

I can change the automatic size of the thumbnails, but 400 px seems like a good width to me.

Another thumbnail test with width set to 720.

Too bad I can't upload images more than 1mb. So, you get a dumbed down image.

Well, if that's the kind of photo you want to post, I could raise the limit! I'm not completely decided. I like the 720px thumbnail for now. Open to feedback.

All right, the attachment limit is much higher now. I don't think I want to go any higher than that. I'll be happy to see big versions of worthy photos but please don't default to making every one the full size! Discretion is the better part of valor. (Sometimes.)

The following features would be really useful:
* vimeo video tag
* Zapiks video tag
* url tag that allows wrapping around images like [img]gif[/img]

Can't upload the original because it is 6.9.mb!

I'll leave it to you to test, but you should be able to embed vimeo now.

I'm biting my tongue and doing another about face, but the attachment limit has been raised yet again. I reserve the right to lower it at my discretion in the future, of course.

You should already be able to wrap a url tag around an image, so maybe I don't understand what you want?

I'll investigate Zapiks.

Changed the vimeo code to mimic the youtube. No need to have different conventions to do exactly the same thing!

Changing the title to better reflect what I'm trying to do with this thread.

Also, Bode kicks ass. Congratulations on your three medals so far at Whistler, Bode!

This doesn't work. It enables people to clikc on the image and go to the url with the video.

Not quite sure what needs to be inside the zapkis tags. filename minus the .html?

Another test, because the zapiks embed works for me:

I'm using Firefox and the zapiks embed definitely works for me, jumpturn. What browser are you using? Did you try to copy and paste where I've embedded it? It's a little more complicated than youtube or vimeo, because the number you need to include isn't in the url. If you look at the video or the embed code, the necessary identifier is the value of "abcde" in the part of the source that says "file=abcde"

Definitely working from my armchair!

In other news, Jason just called me from the summit of Mineral Mountain on the exit from a south-to-north traverse of the Picket Range. My heart is filled with hate. Time for a shot of whisky to numb the butthurt from being stuck in town on LN2 duty. Oh, the perils of gainful employment.

jumpturn, regarding the url wrap, your code was a bit amiss. It should be like this:

Code: Select all

[url=http://www.tvmountain.com/index.php?option=com_hwdvideoshare&task=viewvideo&Itemid=173&video_id=173][img]http://www.tvmountain.com/hwdvideos/thumbs/czpitev7fbwog.jpg[/img][/url]

Avatars are enabled but signatures are not. I'm sorry if that's what somebody wants, but I can't stomach youtube sigs and I don't want it to be necessary for people to login to avoid such a travesty.

To get a "Custom User Title," which allows behavior similar to a "status update," and currently says "wants to play." under skykilo to the right:
*click "User Control Panel" on the upper left just under the logo
*click "Profile" on the upper menu
*enter text into "Custom Title" and click "Submit."

Bing bang boom, just like that.

I've suffered from overstoke myself; it's one of the strongest symptoms of SkiSickness.

I've changed the registration agreement. New users agree to post a trip report when they register. Failure to do so will result in severe account restrictions. Previously registered users get grandfathered into good graces.

What kind of trip report are we talking about? Another day skiing low angle groomers at some overpriced resort? Schralping the boot bottom pow in some flat thicket? Or maybe a fishing trip, trolling for some suckers to take the bait?

It says "adventurous," which to me would imply none of that. Do you think this requirement is a poor choice? I'm not committed to it.

I could just lock registration, but that's not exactly what I want. If you give me an idea and a reason behind it, I might implement it.

Just to provide a little more information, the automated registration settings that come with the software are
*disable
*none
*by user
*by Admin

Disable means that people can't register. None means that people can register freely without so much as email confirmation. So right now it's set to "by Admin" with that text on the registration page. Like I said, open to feedback. But I'm not interested in having 10,000 members and it seems like there should be some non-random criteria.

Along the lines of your post, jumpturn, I could add a forum for older trip reports so that people could dig into their archives to post something more exceptional for a first post. Then emphasize this in the registration agreement text.

I could disable registration, requiring me to manually register people, but that would make it more of an exclusive club.

What would you like? Qu'est-ce que vous voulez? (Not to be polite, but to emphasize that this is a plural you.)

I don't really have an opinion.

It depends how you want to brand the forum.

If you want rad stuff, you got to get rad people to post TRs. They may adhere to the moto: "I''m so rad you should pay me!" So, you may have to rope them in before they are that rad! Or, make it a peer thing....

But, I think it would be cool to have a high quality site where you don't have to wade through tons of junk to find awesome TRs and info on lines you may want to do.

I'm not paying anybody. Nobody's paying me. Don't have any ideas about branding the forum.

The goal is certainly to have a high concentration of quality content, hopefully from a variety of people and places. Let's just lead by example and see where it goes. Mostly I'll probably just run in circles with this site and spend my time not-skiing. ;)

I changed the wording of the registration agreement again.
