A Couple of Couloirs

Post by Alex »

So these aren't super unique lines.
But what is amazing about this TR is that they were both skied by Maddy, who's been skiing for a little bit more than a year, with literally no experience before that.

After Sky & I skied Cheakamus the day before. We had a lazy New Years Eve and left the Russet hut shortly after 11am to go ski the Banana Chute on Fissile. Re-charged with a butter fried frozen bagel breakfast, we set off for the South Face of Fissile and made our way onto a moraine, where we could boot pack up the rotten south facing snow.

There was a big hollow sounding slab at the top, so we skied down the ridge a bit and the snow felt a bit better. I crossed one spot with some funky snow and found the snow to be better on skiers right, where it'd been a bit more sheltered from all the arctic outflows.

On the upper part of the banana chute:

Maddy wanted more. So after a New Years Day recovery, we went up to the Duffy to ski the Aussie couloir.

Somehow, after a week of sunshine, there were still no tracks to be seen on the Anniversary glacier

There we go:

After a bit of a sweaty, hot slog:

We got to the top of the couloir, and booted over to the summit. Maddy was feeling a bit intimated, so we didn't ski off the summit, but put our skis back on at the top of the couloir.
Can't stop her now:

We stopped at the Keith's hut for a quick break on the way out, and made it out before it got dark.

Very nicely done, Maddy. Now don't let Alex kill you!

Also Alex, I beg to differ. The Aussie Couloir is a stunning line.

Thanks Sky, I'll try not to let him kill me. Aussie Couloir was a pretty amazing ski though. I may want to do it again haha.

I'm pretty sure I said unique. Since you had a TR of it from a couple weeks ago.
It is cool looking. Lots of sweet photo opportunities. And I had fun skiing it.

That's a cool glacier up there. Lots of fun lines to go ski. Maybe we should go try to do a tri-fecta (or more) up there when the days get a bit longer.

Fatness, laziness, fear of avalanches OR alpine wind OR both? Where is the Cham stoke, broseph?
