Mt. Carr & Deception Peak - May 8 & 9

Post by Alex »

I tried to convince some people to stay at the Sphinx (Burton) hut for some weekend fun. But after some last minute bailing, it ended up being Maddy, Craig, & I who went.

We wanted to catch most of the Canucks game on Friday night, which was a big mistake, since when we were down 4-1, I got a little frustrated and wasn't paying enough attention while driving. This resulted in a speeding ticket. Why would you spend all this money on a brand new highway, and not even be allowed to go over 80 kph? It's pretty much straight enough now to be smack dab in the middle of the prairies.

Anyways, we didn't end up getting on the Rubble Creek trail till shortly after dark. We put skis on just before the 5km mark on the trail, and skinned up some slippery and icy slopes to Garibaldi Lake... which was nice and foggy. So since we couldn't see more than 5 feet infront of us thanks to the fog, we opted to overnight in the nearby day shelter.

The next morning we awoke to bright and sunny skies.

And we quickly figured out that we had all forgotten to bring sunscreen. So after I cut a mouth hole in the leg of one of my boxers, I had a pretty classy get up:

We skinned across the lake, with tantalizing views of the bountiful ski lines and our eventual line up and down Mt. Carr.

When we got to the hut we played with fire for a while:

and melted snow for drinking water. We later found out that we could have just gotten water from the creek which was pretty melted out. We followed the obvious ramp that stays low angled for most of the way up Mt. Carr. About an hour and a half or two in and Craig wasn't feeling so well. Something about fighting off a cold and not enough sleep. Craig turned around and skied some beautiful corn to the hut, while Maddy and I kept going.

We had a few forced nap breaks during white-outs to make sure we knew where we were stepping when the glacier got a bit more open. But other than that it was smooth sailing up to the top.

We summited up the NW ridge, kicking easy steps to the summit

Where we could see what was most likely Sky's ski tracks from the day before, during the beginning of their trip.

I got pretty stoked looking down that line and at the North Face of Parapet, but this was Maddy's 15th day EVER skiing, so maybe we should turn around and ski what we came up. We ended up waiting around for half an hour to see if the sun would come back out from behind the clouds, but it didn't work.
I skied off the summit, then belayed Maddy as she downclimbed a small (2m) step above a huge wind form.
We skied down in somewhat flat light with beautiful views of Garibaldi Lake below.

A relaxing and warm night, led to Craig not wearing any pants on day 2.

And after that somewhat un-attractive look, Desception's beautiful North Face descided to say hi.

Image

It was a quick climb to the top on pretty low angled terrain. At the summit we had great views of Garibaldi, and Dalton Dome looked like it had some pretty nice ski lines on it.

Image

After a few quick calls to mothers to wish them "Happy Mothers Day, thanks for being such a good mother for letting me ski on mothers day", Craig was the first to descend.

Then Maddy

Then Me

All the way down the face. It was a pretty perfect angle to just crank some huge turns on. Then at the bottom we had some fun corn all the way back to the lake.

We packed up and slogged back across the lake. We ended up being able to watch the 3rd period of the Canuck's victory over Chicago. Great end to a fun weekend. Thanks Craig & Maddy!

Those were our tracks. Deception is so nice. Good choice: if Maddy doesn't like that, she probably just doesn't like backcountry skiing.

Maddy was stoked on Deception. She was cranking non-stop turns the whole way down the face.

She's just a little sun-burnt now. Which means she hates her new nickname "Ruby".
Apparently I'm getting blamed for forgetting the sunscreen.

15th day EVER!? Looks like she's tearing it up! This is inspiring me to get my novice girlfriend out amongst some alpine grandeur with skis on her feet this spring.

I too was skiing sans pants this past week.
