Wallowa Range (NE Oregon)

Post by firstd73 »

A recent 7-day trip to the Wallowas yielded quite the variety. We were served with the nastiest dose of trap/breakable crust (even Beastmode who carries multiple defenders on his back couldn't fight through that SHIT) & routefinding prerequisites in order to even find the Big Sheep Basin Hut. Basically a glorified tent system, but full amenities of wood burning stove, propane gas stove/lights. All in all, not bad when you can ski north facing pow, and south facing corn on the same day due to the endless ridge lines in this range.

Good 2.5k shots to valley floor, or if you choose, long skimo-type tours linking ridges to valley floors (which we did on a couple of days) making for very long outings (dropped some noticeable body weight on this trip). Word for the wise: other huts in the Wallowa range are reportedly better. Connelly (who runs the joint), admitted the Big Sheep area has sorta gone to hell in recent years.

The range is small, but the terrain is endless:

Looks like good skiing there. So many ranges in the lower 48 nevermind North America and South America and the rest of the world. How to ski it all? Better start by taking more vacations.
